Multifunctional bioactive glasses/ceramics

Silica-based bioactive glasses/glass ceramics (BGs/BGCs) are well known for their ability to form a chemical bond with both hard and soft tissues by means of a complex mechanism (bioactivity). Recently, it was postulated that the ionic dissolution products released by these materials stimulate the genes of cells toward a path of regeneration and self-repair. The composition of BGs/BGCs can be easily modified during their synthesis or by means of chemical treatment (e.g. ion-exchange), introducing ions having therapeutic effect (stimulation the expression of several genes of osteoblastic cells, angiogenesis, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects). BGs/BGCs can be prepared by melt processing or sol-gel technique, to produce bulk samples, micro-nano powders, coatings and macroporous structures. Tailored compositions have been optimized, by doping BGs/BGCs with several element (Mg, F, B, Sr, Ag, Cu, Mn, B, Sr…) with specific actions on both bioactivity and cells proliferation and growth.
